Wheely good times

I'm not sure if rollerskating is experiencing a resurgance in popularity, or maybe my kids have just reached the age when it's cool. But for the second time in a couple months, Sydney was invited to a birthday party at World of Wheels. And this time, the entire family laced up!

For Jeff, this was the first time he'd been on rollerskates since seventh grade, he figured. And there's a big difference, according to him, between ice skating and roller skating. Clearly he was doing his best to lower expectations and give himself an excuse if he looked silly. But it turned out the disclaimers weren't needed. He didn't fall once. (Neither did I. Woohoo!)

It took Sydney a few laps to get her skating legs on.

But right about the time I caught up to her and offered her a hand, she looked at me and said, "uh, Mom, I can this myself."

AJ took off with ease. And just like on ice skates, I can't keep up with him.

The highlight for AJ was the dice game. It's a total game of chance in which skaters pick one of four corners. Somebody rolls a big die and if it happens to be your number, you're out. Then everybody skates to a new corner and the die is rolled again.

I, wisely, sat out of the game. Jeff came really close to winning. Which would have been really embarassing since that would mean a whole bunch of kids Sydney's age would have lost.

But as it turned out, there were three winners... all of them kids... and AJ was one of them.

And his big prize? Licorice.

I have to wonder what the rollerskating industry would be like if Michael Jackson never existed. In the time we were there, both Beat It and Thriller blared over the sound system. Just like they did the last time Jeff and I were on skates all those years ago.

Now if we could get brave enough to skate holding hands. Then we'd be cool!
