End of school year fun

Summer vacation is now here. For the kids. Which means it's try to figure out daycare time. For the parents.

The last day of school was supposed to be last Thursday, but then got moved to Friday due to all the snow days we had in April. So that's why I'm just now getting around to blogging about the field trip Sydney took 10 days ago. It's because of all the snow days in April.

(I know. It makes no sense. But it was the best I could come up with.)

Elizabeth, Lauren, Ellie, Sydney and Madi

But then again, the field trip made no sense. I signed up to chaperone a visit to the Children's Museum and Zoo, and instead ended up at a bowling alley.

How does that happen? Well, let me tell you.

As mentioned, I signed up to chaperone Sydney's end-of-year field trip. But then I learned AJ's end-of-year  field trip (not on the same day) would be to WDIO and the Aquarium, which sounded way more fun since I used to work at each of those places. And so I laid on a little bit of guilt and reminded Jeff that he'd yet to chaperone one of Sydney's field trips, and so he volunteered to take my place with the kindergartners. But then he belatedly remembered he had a meeting in the afternoon that he couldn't miss. (It's perfectly understandable how he could make the mistake. He only meets with that same exact group EVERY week at that day or time. Easy to overlook.)

But we worked it out. Jeff would go with the kids to the Children's Museum in the morning, and I'd take his place at the zoo in the afternoon. And then the teachers saw the weather forecast and decided that spending 90+ minutes outside at the zoo in rain and 48 degree temperatures didn't sound very fun. And so they shifted plans to a bowling alley, where the kids did a little bowling.

And a lot of dancing. But with the glowing atomic lights and pounding music, how could you not want to spin on the smoothly polished floor?

(Yes, they were bowling in their socks. Something about 80 kids needing approximately the same shoe size just wasn't working so well.

They make it so easy for kids these days. Not only do they flip the bumpers so the kids couldn't thrown a gutter ball, they also offer a small ramp to get the ball rolling to ensure it makes it all the way to the pins.

Notice how all the kids wore matching t-shirts? One of the classroom helpers happens to be married to the owner of a screenprinting business, and so each of the kids got a free t-shirt. The bright color made it easy to tell which kids were in our group. And on the back, each of the block numbers contains the "autographs" of the kids. What a great souvenir!

And what a great afternoon. As much as I tease Jeff about it, I'm glad I was able to join the kids for a couple hours. And for Sydney it was the ideal situation. She got to have both mom AND dad join her for this special day.

Maybe we're not so bad, afterall.
