Two on one

At least they were in the same arena. And walking back and forth between the ends of the rink let me pretend I was keeping warm.

Monday night was AJ's turn to play his first hockey scrimmage of the season. And then, just to make things interesting, the Sydney's coaches decided - instead of holding a regular practice - to let the Mite 1 teams play a game against each other. So we had two games to watch, at the same time.

AJ played well. He's gotten faster and more aggressive (translation: he'll skate after the puck even if it means a collision with another player) since last year.

Jeff's unofficial tally had AJ taking more shots on goal than anyone else on his team. Unfortunately for AJ, the Proctor goalie was also having a good night. (Translation: AJ scored zero goals.)

The Mite 2s play 1:30 shifts, and there were three lines, which meant each time AJ got off the ice, I'd have three minutes to go watch Sydney's scrimmage.

And then it was time to walk back and watch AJ's game.

And then back to Sydney. Check it out, she's the one in white and she actually skated with the puck!

And then back to AJ. Of course their shifts never totally aligned. There were times both were on the ice, and other instances when both were on the bench at the same time. Initially, in Sydney's game, the kids were skating two minute shifts, but at some point the coaches noticed how confused the kids were getting by the whistles signaling line changes in the other game, and so switched up so both games changed lines at the same time.

Much to her brother's dismay (since he hadn't scored a goal), Sydney did score once in her game.

Equally frustrating for AJ, being that it was his first game when they actually kept score, they ended in a tie.

But AJ still had fun. He told me at bedtime that he likes being a Mite 2 better than a Mite 1, because he "likes it to be a challenge."

Kind of like watching two kids play in two different games at the same time: definitely a challenge.
