Let the dreaming begin

The bucket of Halloween candy is still quite full, but already the excitement of another holiday has firmly taken hold. There's nothing like the arrival of the Target toy catalog to inspire my children's hopeful imaginations and dreams of Christmas.

For the last month or so, any time certain commercials are played, or we're shopping and the kids point out toys they really, really want, I give them the standard reply, "Put it on your list." That's the shortened version of, "You're not getting any toys right now, but put it on your wish list and maybe, just maybe, you'll get it for Christmas."

Their lists from Christmases past, because of their limited/non-existent writing skills, were really mental lists in the over-crowded short-term recall section of mommy's brain. Not the most effective filing system!  But now, thanks to a clever art director at Target, they really do have a list. This year's catalog includes a box they can check next to each item.

AJ grabbed a pen and let his optimism run wild.

Anything involving Legos is on his list, including the Lego games on Wii and Nintendo (neither of which we own.) Surprisingly, he wants a wagon and an Easy Bake Oven. (Actually, that last one isn't a surprise to me. He's practically memorized the TV commercial. "Mom, we can make our own cupcakes!") Also making the list: Creepy Crawlers Bug Maker and Doctor Dreadful Zombie Lab. Perhaps he's still feeling the rush of Halloween.

Or maybe he's just a boy.

As for Sydney, she hasn't spent nearly as much time paging through the catalog as AJ (he didn't give her much chance to look.) But she has made it clear she needs a dollhouse and a princess castle big enough for her Barbies.

Put in the list.
