Just for kicks

We've got another soccer player in the family. Sydney has been waiting and waiting for her first practice.

The wait seemed even longer for her the last month and a half. First, she got a new ball for her birthday, and then we picked up some pink socks while we were on vacation. And then her brother started soccer practice two weeks ago. And still she had to wait. But finally, it's her turn.

I hate to say it, but...

She runs like a girl.

More accurately, she skips more than she runs.

To her credit, she's fearless when it comes to confrontation. Of course it helped that it was her big brother in the goal.

Her coach's son played hockey with AJ last winter, so when she saw AJ sitting on the sidelines, she invited him to help out as her assistant. AJ immediately suggested he could teach the kids "the bunny hop", something he just learned at his last practice.

One of the best surprises for Sydney? Finding out her friend Jayce is on her team.

At one point, when the coach was pairing up the kids for some drill, I heard Sydney call out, "Jayce wants to play with me."

Towards the end of practice, Sydney finally started running.... for the sidelines. It was during a break when the coach told the kids to go grab their water bottles.

At least she spent the entire hour paying attention to the coach and following directions. Not once did she stop to pick clovers.

The real fun starts Monday. That's when Sydney has her first game, at the same time AJ has practice. In two different places.
