Child's play - Madison style

One of the good things about focusing on family-friendly attractions when we travel, I figure, is once the kids are grown, Jeff and I will be able to revisit some of these cities, and it will seem like an all new experience.

For instance, I'm sure Madison, Wisconsin, is a lovely town. We drove through it on the way to Chicago, and stayed there on our way home. But other than a brief walk around the UW campus near our hotel, about all we saw was this:

Wheeeee!!! Give her a cape and Sydney is happy. Which means the Children's Museum in Madison got glowing reviews from my kids. It's not as nice as the one in St. Paul, but was better, I think, than the one in Chicago.

For AJ, the best part was the running wheel, in which he got to pretend to be a hamster. It's a lot harder than it looks.

We spent a lot of time in the toddler area, oddly enough. It seemed to have an African village theme. Sydney just wanted to pretend she was a princess (she had a cape, after all) on a carriage ride.

AJ liked the drums...

And sleeping in what he called "the onion".

The museum also featured this unique climbing structure/slide. Both of the kids tried it exactly once. That was apparently enough to prove their bravery.

Just how high up was she? Check out the next picture.

Of course, as all good Children's Museum's have, there was a kitchen/restaurant area. Here, Sydney was able to make pizza and pies for a rather demanding customer. (The guy in blue in the photo below.)

Through an online sales promotion shortly before our trip, I'd been able to buy at half price an expanded "Passport" membership to our local children's museum, which was good at children's and science museums nationwide. Definitely a good investment for this vacation.
