Generations of friends

Nature or nurture? Sydney and Lily share no genes, though the fact that they're both preschool aged girls may have something to do with their many common interests. Or maybe it's because their moms share so many common interests that they seem destined to be good friends.

Lily is the daughter of my longtime friend Geralyn, and on Saturday morning she came over to play for a few hours while the rest of her family attended a funeral.

And guess what?

They both like pink. And purple.

And hair pretties. (We made matching hair bows with my super cool new "Bowdabra".)

And princesses and fairies and Barbies.

Each had a Barbie and Ken, but the rest of the dolls all had to have made up names. Apparently two dolls with the same name is the limit. After that it's just far too confusing.

"Let's pretend Barbie did..."

"Pretend my Barbie said..."

It was hysterical and awesome to listen to them play.

When they ran out of Barbie adventures, they shifted to the other side of the living room and set up a Disney Princess/Playmobil empire. Tinkerbell made a few guest appearances, keeping everyone in line.

When it was time to bring Lily back, neither girl wanted the play date to end. As a compromise, Sydney rode with in the car so they could watch a Dora movie together during the drive. When we got to the church, the girls played briefly together in the nursery before at last we had to leave. But we've promised we'll get together again soon. This time at Lily's house.

And this time, Sydney and Lily's moms will have more time to play together, too. Or maybe just drink wine together and talk about how wonderful it is to see a fabulous friendship continue on in a new generation.
