Clearing out the classroom

Today is AJ's last day of kindergarten. For the last few days he's been bringing home more and more of the supplies we stocked up on just nine months ago. Friday was the surest sign of all that the end of the year was near. AJ got off the bus carrying his nap mat.

Within his backpack was a note from the teacher warning parents to make sure the kids carried empty backpacks each of the remaining three days because she had a lot of goodies to stuff in them. By yesterday we had gym shoes, the laminated name label on his desk, plus a long, thin strip of paper that apparently charted how many times he asked the class assistant for help. He's also brought home multiple notebooks full of drawings that have me wondering at what point school counselors step in and question his emotional stability. As I flipped through the pages, AJ's change in interests over the year were apparent. Swordfighting pirates...

...gave way to various Revolutionary War scenes. The description on the left side, in case you can't read it, I decipher as "George Washington's army." The guy on the far right with what looks like three eyes... that's General Washinton leading the charge. I love the hair pulled back in a braided pony tail. AJ certainly pays attention to detail.

And then came the picture I can only assume was drawn the first week of May, coinciding with the news coverage following the capture of Osama bin Laden.

Just a half day of class left to go, and then it's no more homework, no more books... or the tune kids AJ's age are more likely to sing (thanks to Phineas and Ferb):

There's 104 days of summer vacation,
and school comes along just to end it.
So the annual problem for our generation
is finding a good way to spend it.
