The big slide

Aside from the corn dogs and cotton candy and milk shakes and claustophobia-inducing crowds of people and miles of walking back and forth... aside from all that... does anything say Minnesota State Fair quite like the big yellow slide?

For Sydney, it was her whole reason for going, and from the moment we first passed through the gates, her consistent question was, "Now can we go on the slide?" (Except for when she was asking, "When can I ride in the stroller?" That was her other consistent question.)

At last, after lunch, it was time. Time to climb and climb and climb.

Uncle Eric and cousin Zane were there too, (as we cousins Jonathon and Jessica.)

And then, the moment she'd been waiting for. To Sydney's dismay, she wasn't quite tall enough to go down by herself, and thus had to take her place on the front of my burlap mat.

AJ was racing us, which meant I didn't get a photo of him, but here's Jonathon, Jeff and my Dad all coming down.

The funny thing about my dad is that I hadn't realized he was planning to come with us. And so right before we headed up the steps, I handed him Sydney's stuffed toy and asked him to hang on to it for us. He dutifully did. Click on the photo to enlarge it and note what's in in his hand. "Lambie" got to ride down the slide, too. Do you suppose anyone wondered if it was his lucky charm?

Bringing up the rear? Eric and Zane.

After all the build up in Sydney's mind, one ride simply wasn't enough. And so a while later, she broached the subject of doing it again. Except this time, she wondered if perhaps Auntie Lisa would want to ride with her. Ever the good sport, my sister agreed, and so took my kids again on the long climb up.

Followed by the fun ride down.

Much to Sydney's delight, a short time later we visited the Kid-way. And there we found... a slide that she could do... All. By. Herself.

And now we have to wait another year. (Though I have plenty of other stories to share in coming days.) We love the Fair!
