Not quite ready to enlist

Last year at this time, AJ was still seeing himself as a future Army general. He wore camouflage pants on the first day of school, and dressed as an Army soldier for Halloween.

Then the hockey season started, and suddenly AJ's career goal shifted to playing in the NHL. By spring, his loyalties switched to Major League Baseball. His plans to answer Uncle Sam's call were long forgotten.

Based on his skills at the State Fair, that's probably a good thing.

It started when he saw his cousin Jonathon heading to the Marine recruiters' booth to show off his strength doing pull-ups. My Minnesota Twins fan watched for a moment and then asked, "Why would anyone want to be a Mariner?"

"Marine, AJ. It's not the same as the baseball team from Seattle."

Our next stop, of course, had to be at the National Guard recruiters' booth. In the wake of Jonathon's 18 pull-ups, AJ decided he needed to show off his strength. First there were sit-ups...

...followed by push-ups. (Yes, that's my sister and niece who now have moved into position to do sit-ups.)

Perhaps AJ would have better luck digging trenches. He seemed to enjoy the giant sandbox we encountered in a different booth.

As he and Sydney happily scooped and raked dirt into buckets, I couldn't help but wonder - why is it they never use our sandbox, but are so happy to play in the one at the Fair.

It's because, according to AJ, our sandbox has dangerous and icky things, like spiders and woodticks.

Yeah. He's probably not quite ready to be a soldier.
